What transportation network is planned in Dholera?

Dholera has a carefully planned transportation network that includes highways, an airport, internal wide roads, and future metro and rail links. The main purpose is to connect the city smoothly with Ahmedabad and support long term industrial growth.

After going through Dholera Smart City planning maps and infrastructure layouts over the years, one thing becomes quite clear. Transportation was never treated as a secondary feature. It feels more like the backbone of the project. Without strong connectivity, a new city located away from major urban centers would struggle to attract industries or residents, and the planners seem to have recognized this reality early on.

Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway

The Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway will probably remain the most important connection for many years. This road is expected to link Dholera directly with Ahmedabad, which is the nearest major city and economic hub. Travel time is often estimated at around one hour, though the actual experience will depend on traffic and final road conditions.

In the early stages of development, it seems likely that many professionals and workers will continue living in Ahmedabad and commute when necessary. Because of this, the expressway could become the practical lifeline of the city. From the construction updates and images available so far, long stretches of the road already appear developed, even if some portions are still under progress.

Internal Road Network

Once you look inside the planned city area, the road layout begins to stand out. The main corridors are designed as six lane roads, while secondary routes vary between four lane and smaller connectors. Service roads are included in several sections, which is not something commonly seen in newly developing towns.

When I first examined the TP1 planning maps, the scale of the road network felt surprisingly large for a place that still has a small population. But the intention becomes clearer with time. The design is meant to support a much bigger city in the future. Compared to many Indian towns where roads become congested as growth happens, Dholera’s layout appears more structured and forward looking.

Dholera International Airport

Another major part of the transport system is the planned Dholera International Airport. The airport is expected to handle both cargo and passenger flights, although industrial use may become important first. Companies involved in manufacturing and exports usually depend on reliable logistics, and air connectivity can support that.

Construction activity has already started, which suggests that the airport is moving beyond the planning stage. Even so, passenger traffic may take time to build up because city population growth will be gradual.

Metro and Rail Connectivity

Future metro connectivity between Ahmedabad and Dholera has also been proposed. If completed, this system could make daily travel easier and reduce dependence on private vehicles. For now, it remains a longer term plan, and timelines may change as development progresses.

Rail connectivity is also expected, mainly for freight movement. Industrial zones generally require rail transport because heavy goods cannot move efficiently by road alone. Planned rail links should eventually connect Dholera with the wider national railway network.

Local Transport and Mobility

Public transport inside the city is part of the overall plan as well. Bus routes are expected to link residential areas with industrial zones so that daily workers can travel without needing private vehicles. Smart bus stops and organized routes appear in planning layouts, though these systems will become meaningful only as population increases.

There is also clear separation between logistics traffic and residential movement wherever possible. Dedicated truck routes are intended to reduce congestion inside living areas. Older cities rarely managed this kind of planning, which makes the difference noticeable.

Footpaths and cycling space are included along several roads, often with tree lined sections that provide shade. Whether cycling becomes common will depend on future lifestyle patterns, but the provision itself shows a more modern planning approach.

Right now the transportation network still feels quiet because development is in the early stage. Wide roads and large intersections sometimes look almost empty. Yet the physical structure already exists, and that carries some significance. Many projects promise infrastructure later, while here much of the groundwork has come first. Over time, the real value of this network will become clearer as industries and residents begin to fill the city.
